Department of Probability and Statistics

History of the department

Following the development of mathematics since the founding of the Great Insurgent School in Serbia in 1808, and the later formation of the Lyceum, Philosophical, Natural and Mathematical and Mathematics Faculties, we find the following data related to the disciplines of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics.

Lyceum

In the high school - Lyceum, which was established in Kragujevac in 1838, among the teaching subjects is the subject of Statistics. In addition to mathematics and German, statistics was taught by Petar Radovanović, one of the first two professors of the Lyceum. In 1863, the departments of the Lyceum grew into faculties - Philosophical, Legal and Technical, with mathematics being taught only at the Technical Faculty. In 1873, two departments were founded at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade - Historical-Philological and Natural-Mathematical, where mathematics and natural sciences were studied. Among the 8 common subjects for the entire Faculty of Philosophy is Statistics.

PMF

After the formation of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Belgrade in 1947, the subject Theory of Probability appeared for the first time at this faculty in the academic year 1951/52. Years and that as an optional subject. In the curricula for the school year 1952/53. year there are courses Probability Theory and a special course Application of Probability Theory. These subjects were taught first by Dragoljub Marković, and later by Časlav Stanojević. In the curricula for the school year 1961/62. year, and only on the B course at that time, there is the subject Theory of Probability with Applications. This subject has been taught since the 1965/66 school year. year, and lectures are given by Zoran Ivković. School year 1961/62. Postgraduate studies with 5 majors are established at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics. In the course of Practical Mathematics, after the first semester, which is mandatory for all courses, the following courses are taken: Probability theory with application (information theory, game theory, communication theory), mathematical statistics and theory of random processes. The first three master's theses in the field of probability and statistics at the Faculty of Science were defended by: Stevan Stojanović 1962: Correlation and regression, Svetozar Vukadinović 1963: Distribution of maximum arterial blood pressure in the human population and Jovan Mališić 1964: Random elements with values in the Banach space.

Establishment of the Department of Probability and Statistics

The curriculum from 1966/67. In 1972, a special Department of Statistics was introduced, and the Statute of 1972 introduced the Department of Statistics with Applications and the Department of Probability and Statistics. A number of special courses with seminars were introduced as part of postgraduate studies: Zoran Ivković: Gaussian processes, Information theory, Stevan Stojanović: Renewal theory, Stochastic models in operational research, Mass service theory, Jovan Mališić: Time series analysis.

Narrow professional courses in the department of probability and statistics from its establishment in 1966 until 2005-06. During the school year, the following permanently employed members of the Department of Probability and Statistics taught: Zoran Ivković, Stevan Stojanović, Jovan Mališić, Dragan Banjević, Predrag Peruničić, Zoran Glišić, Pavle Mladenović, Dražen Pantić, Vesna Jevremović and Slobodanka Janković. In addition to the aforementioned mathematicians, the exercises were performed by the following assistants: Jovan Vukmirović, Viktor Obuljen, Zorana Najdanović, Milan Jovanović, Ana Manola, Marko Obradović and Kristina Veljković. External collaborators also took part in teaching.

Seminars

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the Faculty of Science and Mathematics occasionally held a Seminar on Probability and Applications, led by Zoran Ivković and Dragan Banjević. In addition to local mathematicians, guests from Hungary, Russia and Norway also performed at the Seminar.

From the school year 1996-97. until the 2021-22 school year. In 2008, the seminar was called Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, and the seminar leader was Pavle Mladenović. In the period from 1996 to 2022, about 200 meetings of the Seminar were held, and lectures were given not only by domestic mathematicians, but also by prominent mathematicians from foreign universities: from Moscow State University (A.T. Fomenko 1997, A.V. Bulinski 1998, V. I. Piterbarg 2002, G.V. Nosovski 2002), from the University of Copenhagen (Thomas Mikos 2006), from the Technical University of Berlin (Julia Ruscher 2009), Cornell University (G. Samorodnicki, 2009 and 2018), University of St. Petersburg (Jakov Nikitin 2015, 2016), the University of Princeton and the University of California in San Diego (Jelena Bradić 2009, 2012 and 2018, Jelena Bradić completed her basic and master's studies at the Faculty of Mathematics in Belgrade) and other.

From the school year 2022-23. Since 2010, the seminar has been working under the name Seminar of the Department of Probability and Statistics.

Department of statistics, actuarial and financial mathematics

The Scientific and Teaching Council of the Faculty of Mathematics met on June 24, 2005. modified the curriculum of the Probability and Statistics major in accordance with Article 20 of the Law on the University and adopted the new name of the major: Statistics, Actuarial and Financial Mathematics. In addition to other changes, the courses Elements of Actuarial Mathematics and Elements of Financial Mathematics were introduced into the curriculum of this major (Statute of the Faculty of Mathematics from 2006). The module (major) entitled Statistics, actuarial and financial mathematics is also included in the accredited study program Mathematics, accredited in 2006, 2009, 2015 and 2022. Of the students who completed their basic studies under accredited plans and programs from 2006 on the Statistics module,

In the period from 2006-2023. In 2008, classes in highly specialized subjects in the field of Probability and Statistics at all levels of study (basic, master's and doctoral) were taught by: Pavle Mladenović, Vesna Jevremović, Slobodanka Janković, Ljiljana Petrović (external associate), Milan Merkle (external associate), Jovan Vukmirović , Jelena Jocković, Marko Obradović, Milan Jovanović, Lenka Glavaš, Bojana Milošević, Marija Cuparić, Zoran Vidović (external associate) and Vladimir Božin (from the Department of Analysis).
